When we talk about art, we often focus on the finished product—the polished jewelry, the intricate detail, the final form. But behind every piece of meaningful work is a maker whose story is anything but polished. In this episode of Heart and Hands of a Maker, I had the privilege of speaking with Robert Lopez, a metalsmith, jewelry designer, instructor, toolmaker, and deeply soulful creator whose work is as bold and beautiful as the journey that shaped it.
This is more than a conversation about technique; it’s about resilience, risk-taking, and the beauty that comes from embracing the dents, dings, and imperfections of life—both in jewelry and in one’s self.
There’s a moment in the conversation that still echoes: “I was too dumb to fail.”
That radical honesty summed up how Robert approached risk. Without formal training, industry contacts, or financial safety nets, he still quit his job in construction to go all-in on jewelry.
And he didn’t just survive—he thrived. Because he chose boldness over safety, truth over trend, and originality over imitation.

If there’s one thread running through Robert’s story, it’s boldness.
Robert didn’t wait for permission to become an artist. He didn’t let the fear of failure stop him. There was no interest in conforming to trends or bend to outside pressure. He just kept showing up—torch in hand, vision in heart.
“The people who are remembered,” he says, “are the ones who take risks. Sure, you might fall. You might mess up. But that’s where the magic happens.”
And that’s the kind of creative fire we should all be chasing.
